Officially opened in 1910, Zammit Clapp has also been referred to as the ‘Blue Sisters’, a name remarking the operators of the hospital at that time. In 1979 the hospital was closed however, it was re-opened in 1991 as a hospital dedicated to the needs of the elderly whereby it closed again shortly after the opening of Mater Dei hospital. In 2012 Zammit Clapp Hospital re-opened as a residential nursing facility for the elderly. CareMalta have been trusted to operate Zammit Clapp Hospital Residential Home under the Public Private Partnership scheme of which CareMalta is responsible for the overall services offered by the home.
All admissions are referred to by the department of the Elderly and community care. The potential resident and his relatives are invited to visit the home to attend an orientation visit, prior to their the admission. During this visit, new residents will be given a tour of the facility and briefed on the facilities offered at the Home.
This facility, is a 131-bedded residential home of which 14 are located in a specialized dementia unit. Rooms at Zammit Clapp are either 4 bedded or 2 bedded with 3 single rooms. Each room consists of a bed, wardrobe and a frigo-bar. All beds are elderly-friendly and are all spinal/hospital beds. Further more other equipment includes air mattresses, hoists, slings, pressure relieving cushions and dyson nettings. All beds have a nursing call alarm system.
Services include:
Dining Facilities’ – At Zammit Clapp there is a dining room on each floor. Meals are provided through a menu system.Room service is provided for those unable to go to the dining room due to illness or any other certified ailment.
Laundry – Residents’ personal clothes are washed in-house, and included in the daily room rate. It is important that all clothing are marked with proper tailor made labels indicating name and surname. No felt pen markings permitted.
Linen Service – Sheets, pillow cases, towels, and other personal needs are provided in house
Mass is celebrated in the Home’s chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. There is room service Holy Communion for those residents who cannot attend Mass in the Chapel.
One monthly resident’s committee meetings are organized however an ‘open door policy’ is applied, so residents are free to discuss any matter any time.
Alcohol & Smoking – Smoking is prohibited inside the facility however, permitted in outdoor premises in designated areas. Alcohol consumption is restricted but permitted
Fire Safety – The facility is equipped with a fire alarm system, fire doors and all necessary equipment related to any fire hazard.

A critical care nurse by profession since 2011, Lara joined first joined HILA Homes in June 2021 as Home Manager for Dar Bjorn in Qormi. Throughout her years working in the Intensive Treatment Unit, ITU, at Mater Dei, Lara had the opportunity to make a difference during a person’s vulnerable moment in life. This involved working in a fast-paced medical environment which helped her gain communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills. In 2023 Lara was appointed as Facility Manager Zammit Clapp Residential Home. Lara holds a Degree in Nursing Studies and a Masters in Critical Care awarded by Cardiff University.

All residents can keep their family doctor as long as he/she is willing to visit them at Zammit Clapp should the need arise. If this is not possible we will provide residents with a family doctor to follow up or else the home can contact a doctor from the Gzira Health Centre. Moreover, through the Government Scheme, the home offers the service of a consultant geriatrician who visits the residents on a regular basis.
The services of a podologist, social worker, phyiotherapist and geratiatrician are offered free of charge by the Department. Caremalta also provides free of charge the service of a phlebotomist. Blood investigations can be carried out at Zammit Clapp .
Medicines are prepared by the nurse in charge. Medicines are dispensed by the pharmacist through the Pharmacy of your Choice ( POYC) scheme. Relatives area at the liberty of supplying medicines themselves to the residents. We also offer the possibility that any resident is offered the service of treatment purchasing through the home at his commodity to facilitate the process of the resident’s treatment.
This service is offered on a weekly basis and is offered free of charge as per the PPP scheme. Booking can be made at the reception desk.
Every resident is responsible for his/her personal belongings.The home is not responsible for any valuable items pertaining to the residents which are left in the rooms.
Outings are organized throughout the year. Residents are encouraged to attend, however we do respect the wishes of those who express a wish not to participate. Outings are organised regularly for both mobile and wheel chair users.
The number of private functions are limited only to the residents of the home and their relatives.
